Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

The great question in Martial Arts has always been what style is the best. In 1993 the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) was created to finally answer this age old question. Pitting various martial arts styles against each other in one-on-one combat, the UFC was the platform that proved to the world that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) was the dominant martial art. Even today many of the top pound for pound fighters and UFC Champions like Anderson Silva, George St. Pierre, and José Aldo are practicing BJJ Black Belts.

After this monumental upset to many martial artists, many flocked to BJJ schools in an attempt to learn the art. This doesn't mean that you need to be someone interested in ultimate fighting to participate in BJJ, very few of the students in this program aspire to fight in this type of event.

Everyone knows that 99% of every fight ends up with two people grabbing each other and that 80% end up on the ground either by accident or by design. Jiu-Jitsu needs to be learned in order to defend yourself properly.

With the boom in interest in BJJ due to the success it has enjoyed in the UFC many martial arts schools have tried capitalize on this popularity by advertizing "grappling", "ground fighting", "submission wrestling/fighting" or "Jiu-Jitsu" programs without any verifiable credentials in BJJ. Be an educated martial artist and ensure that you are training REAL BJJ from a school with certified BJJ instructors In Ottawa, there are only 4 BJJ Black Belts and Ronin MMA has 2 of them. Ronin MMA is the only club in Ottawa to offer regular Black Belt instruction, as our Black Belt instructors are on the mats teaching class and training with students daily.

Ronin MMA offers a progressive BJJ curriculum that is structured so that students are able to learn and advance at their own pace. If your interest in BJJ is purely recreational our program offers you the chance to have fun while getting in great shape and learning practical self defence. For students looking to train for competitions our program has produced a very successful BJJ Team that has competed across the world at all of the major tournaments including the IBJJF Mundials, IBJJF Pan-Ams, IBJJF No-Gi Pan-Ams, IBJJF Asian Open, World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup, ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship, NAGA's, and numerous other Canadian and local tournaments.

This is proven in competition, where more than 80% of all Mixed Martial Arts fighters are adopting some form of teqnique from Muay Thai Kickboxing. Mixed Martial Arts

Ronin MMA has always been on the cutting edge of martial arts in Ottawa and was the first school in the Ottawa area to offer Mixed Martial Arts when we opened in the summer of 2003. With the boom in interest in MMA due to the overwhelming popularity of the Ultimate Fighting Championship and other MMA events over the past few years, many martial arts schools have jumped on the bandwagon and are now offering MMA classes with little to no experience in the core arts of MMA (BJJ, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Boxing, etc..). Our experience and knowledge base is what sets us apart from the rest of the schools offering MMA programs. Our MMA program was originally developed based on our two main disciplines (Muay Thai and BJJ) and over the past 8 years has continued to evolve as our instructors and students continually test our MMA system in competition (over 50 fights).

Our MMA program offers students the chance to learn and train MMA techniques in a fun, safe, and controlled environment. Our classes are structured to offer students the option of choosing to train recreationally if they just want to learn the fundamentals of MMA for fun and fitness. Our program also has a competitive stream that will allow aspiring fighters to learn and grow from the amateur ranks all the way up to becoming a professional MMA fighter.

Whether you are just looking to get a taste of some MMA training or you aspire to be an amateur or professional fighter, Ronin MMA has the experience and the ability to get you where you want to be.

Our professional MMA fight team has represented Ronin MMA in organizations such as TKO, IFL, APEX, UCW, UGC, Wreck MMA, Aggression MMA, Freedom Fight, King of the Cage, Warrior-1, and Sengoku Raiden Championships (Japan).

Our amateur MMA fight team has represented Ronin MMA in organizations such as Hybrid Combat, Battle at GAMMA, and Battle of Parc X.
